AC servicing in Qatar: what to do before summer hits

By May, every AC technician in Qatar is booked solid. The homes that stay cool through August are the ones that did the boring work in March and April. Here is what that work actually involves.

Why AC units in Qatar need more attention than elsewhere

Three things wear out air conditioning faster here than almost anywhere: fine dust that clogs filters and coils, outdoor temperatures that keep compressors running close to their limit for months, and humidity in coastal areas such as Al Wakrah and The Pearl that encourages mould in drain lines and ducts.

The result is that a unit that was fine last October may be noticeably weaker by June, using more electricity to produce less cooling.

The pre-summer checklist

  • Deep clean indoor units: filters, evaporator coil and blower, not just a rinse of the filter.
  • Clean the outdoor condenser so heat can actually escape; a dusty condenser is the most common cause of weak cooling.
  • Flush the drain line to prevent the water leak that appears the first humid week of June.
  • Check refrigerant pressure. Low gas usually means a leak, and topping up without fixing it wastes money.
  • Test the thermostat and remote; replace batteries and check the temperature reading against a thermometer.
  • For central systems, ask for duct inspection and cleaning every couple of years.

How often should you service?

Twice a year is the sensible minimum in Qatar: once before summer and once mid-season, around July or August, when the unit has been running hardest. Villas with many units and homes near the coast or construction sites benefit from a quarterly schedule.

Signs you should not wait

  • Water dripping from the indoor unit or staining the wall below it.
  • Ice forming on the pipes or coil.
  • The outdoor unit clicking on and off repeatedly.
  • A sour or musty smell when the unit starts.
  • A sudden jump in your electricity bill with no change in usage.

Getting it done

Message QatarZak on WhatsApp with the number and type of units, your area and a preferred time. An independent AC technician who covers your area will confirm a price and a slot. Booking in March or April gets you the widest choice of dates.
